Flow & Motion – Dombra makes it easy to add movement and nylon percussion to the music. It is a fully sampled instrument with no pre-recorded chords or loops, designed for authentic rhythmic performance. Natural rhythms blend seamlessly across many genres including cinematic, rock, folk, and modern scoring. The instrument is based on a smart engine powered by machine learning and built on real performances. It naturally captures the human feel, timing, and dynamics while staying flexible and easy to use.

You might think this instrument is ethnic strum Kontakt library only. In reality, Flow & Motion – Dombra works great in many genres, from cinematic and pop to ambient, trailer, and modern scoring. Here is the secret: the instrument works perfectly in the background, not only as a main instrument. It creates movement, flow, and rhythm that hold the track together. Sometimes you barely hear it, but when you mute it, the music suddenly feels empty and loses its rhythm. We used it this way in different soundtracks, and it always adds life and movement to the sound without getting in the way.

Ethnic Strum Kontakt

Have you ever found a rhythm kontakt library that you liked, only to find out that the engine only uses one-shots? Did you have to play billions of notes to make it work properly? Maybe the library is difficult to use, lacks a real rhythm engine, or the engine is too basic for complex or custom grooves. Do these libraries use pre-recorded chords? These chords can’t be easily edited. As composers, we understand how frustrating that can be, so we wanted to create something new.

The main idea behind Flow & Motion – Dombra is to create a powerful rhythm instrument that is easy to use. You don’t need to know how the engine works. Just press a few keys, and the instrument will automatically choose the right string and fret. The instrument performs with the same natural feel, timing, and dynamics as a real player.

Ethnic Strum VST

If you want to play melodies with single notes in a classical style, simply turn off the rhythm engine and switch to fully playable mode.

Dombra Machine Learning

Dombra uses a simple, custom machine learning algorithm to generate natural, human-like rhythms. We developed a basic smart system and trained it using thousands of rhythms. The library uses this knowledge to randomly generate good-sounding patterns.

Even better, the engine doesn’t stop there. It also checks how users interact with the library, which rhythms are triggered, how they are played, and which patterns are preferred. The engine slowly adapts and keeps learning. Over time, it gets better at choosing patterns.

Dombra Effects

We included a wide range of built-in effects to provide more creative options. Although the Dombra is a nylon instrument, it responds well to processing. Apply delays, reverbs, distortions, modulations, and more to create unique sounds and interesting effect chains that go far beyond the traditional tone.

Dombra Snapshots

We created several categories of snapshots to speed up the workflow, simplify sound selection, and demonstrate the capabilities of the engine. Each snapshot includes all four rhythm patterns, making the structure feel complete.

The instrument was sampled with a limited range of two strings. But we also captured the tone and playing style of other instruments such as the koto, mandolin, bass, guitars, and synths, and recreated them directly inside the engine with impressive precision.

Dombra Virtual Instrument Settings

Dombra is fully sampled. By default, the engine intelligently selects the appropriate string to produce the best sound. However, if more control is needed, the string can be manually chosen using velocity. This shapes the sound and provides additional control, as it is well known that the same note played on different strings can have a slightly different tone and character.

Dombra Modes

Dombra offers several play modes. In Normal mode, it plays like a real two-string instrument with natural string behavior. Solo mode is designed for playing melodic or lead parts with full expression. Polyphonic mode is useful for playing full chords and harmonies. It surpasses the original instrument’s physical limitations and allows for maximum freedom.

Dombra Presets

Noise reduction is quite strong because we also captured a DI signal with analog compression during recording. We removed the DI layer later because it was redundant with the thin nylon strings. In any case, there was a lot of unwanted analog noise and artifacts. However, we kept the subtle musical noises and natural imperfections. These subtle artifacts come from our real performance sampling approach, which makes the instrument feel more organic. At the same time, we carefully controlled these artifacts to ensure they are not repetitive or distracting, maintaining a natural and musical balance.

Limited range. The instrument range might feel limited to some users. This is because the original dombra has only two strings, which is common for many ethnic instruments. However, you can easily adjust the mic tuning to reach the desired range. The instrument handles moderate pitch shifting well, so you can extend its range without significantly losing sound quality.

As before, we used a performance sampling technique to record highly realistic samples for the new rhythm kontakt library. We applied all our previous experience with instruments to this new one.

NOT ONLY ETHNIC STRUM KONTAKT LIBRARY

Rhythm Virtual Instrument

The Dombra is one of the most iconic ethnic instruments in Central Asia. In Kazakhstan, it is considered a national symbol. Traditionally crafted from a single piece of wood, the dombra has two long strings stretched over a narrow body and is played by plucking. Despite its simplicity, the dombra produces a bright, percussive tone with a strong rhythmic quality. Its clear attack and lively articulation make it ideal for fast patterns and expressive storytelling. Today, the dombra is used in folk music, modern ensembles, orchestras, and even contemporary genres, remaining a proud representation of cultural heritage and musical identity.

We have a deep respect for the traditions and cultural symbolism of the dombra. And we approached its recording with great care and respect. However, we were most inspired by its sound, not only its cultural importance, and beautiful tone, the energy it brings to rhythms, and how naturally it speaks through strumming. Initially, we didn’t plan to feature the dombra in the interface, but we changed our minds and decided to present it in black wood and gold. As with the kobyz we sampled for RUNA, our goal was to honor the instrument’s roots while also revealing how far its sound can go, beyond any boundaries of genre or tradition.
